The sources of violent xenophobia in South Africa – African backlash

Panellist, Alan Storey gives us a metaphor that can hold us

In the weeks before the 2019 Africa in the World festival, devastating riots and attacks fuelled by xenophobia broke out across communities in Johannesburg, South Africa.  A panel moderated by Keith Berwick of the Aspen Institute guides this raw conversation about the ‘cascade of hurt people hurting people’ which he notes, is not unique to South Africa, but “viral in our world today”.  Keith is joined by fellow Apsen Institute moderator and SA business leader, Heather Sonn, Methodist theologian, Alan Storey; Co-founder of the African Women’s Development Fund, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi and Kenyan Member of Parliament, Yusuf Hassan.  This 2-hour video includes the Q&A session with a range of Africa in the World attendees.
