Dr. Jamal Eltaeb is an orthopaedic surgeon, head of traumatology, and General Director of Al Nao Hospital in Omdurman, Sudan. Amid Sudan’s devastating civil war and the near-total collapse of the country’s health system, Dr. Eltaeb has kept Al Nao Hospital operating as one of the last functioning referral hospitals in greater Khartoum—a testament to his resilience and leadership under fire.

Since the conflict escalated in April 2023, he has navigated repeated bombardments, collapsing infrastructure, and acute shortages of electricity and medical supplies, ensuring that hundreds of wounded, displaced and critically ill patients continue to receive care. Under his leadership, the hospital has become a lifeline for the community, embodying resilience, solidarity, and unwavering dedication to saving lives under the most challenging conditions.

Born in Kordofan, Sudan, Dr. Eltaeb studied medicine in Belarus before specialising in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology at Alexandria University in Egypt. In recognition of his humanitarian leadership and commitment to saving lives, he was named the 2025 Aurora Prize Laureate.
