Edgar Pieterse is founding director of the African Centre for Cities (ACC) at the University of Cape Town. He publishes different kinds of text, curates exhibitions, as well as difficult conversations about pressing urban problems.

He is co-founder of CS Studios with Tau Tavengwa, and his latest publication is the co-authored book Cities Rethought: A New Urban Disposition (Polity, 2025). Edgar’s scholarship is animated by a need to make sense of the ways in which climate change, multi-dimensional inequality, informality, governance and technology intersect in urban spaces, especially in Africa and cities of the global majority.
Edgar also leads the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI), is a board member of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and serves on numerous international urban research advisory boards. He is Provost of the Norman Foster Institute.
