

Carlos Ibáñez is Professor in Neuroscience at the School of Life Sciences of Peking University, the Chinese Institute for Brain Research in Beijing, China, and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Dr Ibáñez is a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute, the body that awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He is a Permanent Fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
Dr Ibáñez’s research utilizes a range of molecular, cellular, and genetic techniques to understand and uncover the functions and mechanisms of action of proteins known as growth factors and their receptors, providing a framework to address broader questions in neuroscience and metabolism research, including Alzheimer’s disease and obesity.
He has published over 160 research articles and book chapters and received awards and distinctions from Academia Europaea, the European Research Council, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), and the Wallenberg Foundations. He has been both organizer and frequent lecturer at prestigious international conferences, including the Gordon Research Conferences, EMBO Workshops and Wenner Gren Symposia. He has served as Chief Editor and Board member of several international journals and as a consultant and collaborator of biotech companies, including Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Acceleron Pharmaceuticals, Biogen-Idec, Amgen and GlaxoSmithKline R&D China.
